Nanoscience and Nanotechnology
About the Course
On December 29, 1959, in his classic lecture at the annual meeting of the American Physical Society at Caltech, Richard Feynman said:
“I would like to describe a field in which little has been done, but in which an enormous amount can be done in principle. Furthermore, a point that is most important is that it would have an enormous number of technical applications… there is plenty of room at the bottom.”
He invited the audience to enter and venture into this new field of physics. Within a couple of decades, the term Nanotechnology was coined, and remarkable advancements and novel discoveries in this new “world of nano” followed.
Nanoscience and Nanotechnology deal with understanding and manipulating matter at dimensions of approximately 100 nm and below, with cross-sectoral applications and an interdisciplinary orientation. At the nanoscale, the physical, chemical, and biological properties of materials differ significantly from those of individual atoms, molecules, or bulk matter, enabling entirely new applications.
Nanotechnology encompasses various scientific disciplines, including quantum mechanics, surface science, organic chemistry, molecular biology, semiconductor physics, nanofabrication, and many more.
The M.Sc. programme in Nanoscience and Nanotechnology aims to provide multidisciplinary education to students from Physics, Chemistry, Mathematics, Biological Sciences, and related disciplines. This fascinating science spans research areas ranging from energy and environmental applications to cancer treatment and targeted drug delivery.
Why M.Sc. in Nanoscience & Nanotechnology at the University of Kalyani?
Rapid scientific progress in Nanoscience has made nanoscale phenomena increasingly relevant to everyday life. Globally renowned universities and research institutions already offer postgraduate programmes in this field. In India, however, only a limited number of universities provide such advanced education.
For more than half a century, the University of Kalyani has contributed significantly to higher education, particularly by addressing the needs of rural communities and first-generation learners. Recognizing the growing importance of Nanoscience, the University established this programme to encourage interdisciplinary learning and collaborative research in this exciting and rapidly evolving field.
The M.Sc. programme in Nanoscience and Nanotechnology is the first initiative of its kind in East and North-East India.
Nanotechnology has enormous potential in consumer products, electronics, computing, biotechnology, aerospace, renewable energy, environmental science, defence, healthcare, and medicine. The programme is designed to equip students with comprehensive theoretical knowledge and practical skills needed to contribute to these rapidly expanding sectors.
The course follows a flexible, interdisciplinary curriculum delivered over two years through four semesters. As the field evolves rapidly, the curriculum is continuously updated to reflect recent scientific and technological advancements.
The programme aims to build highly skilled human resources with in-depth knowledge of Nanoscience and Nanotechnology who can translate research into meaningful societal benefits.
Future Prospects
Nanoscience and Nanotechnology are among the fastest-growing areas of modern science and technology. Governments, industries, and research organizations worldwide are making substantial investments in this field because of its transformative potential.
Career opportunities continue to expand in pharmaceutical technology, healthcare, forensic science, biomedical engineering, diagnostics, agriculture, environmental science, advanced materials, and industrial research.
The field also offers significant entrepreneurial opportunities in nanobiotechnology, biomedical research, diagnostics, agriculture, and other emerging technology sectors.
